COMMERCIAL ENDORSEMENT

All the information you need on obtaining a commercially endorsed Advanced Powerboat license, covering required RYA courses, medical fitness certificates, and experience prerequisites.

Parameters of the Advanced Powerboat Commercial License

Is this the right license for you? Explore the definitive boundaries set in place with the Advanced commercial license.

Max distance = 20nm from a safe haven e.g. North Uist to St Kilda spans 35nm (red line), but you're always within 20nm of land on both sides.

Under the UK Small Commercial Vessel Codes of Practice, the number of passengers must never exceed 12.

You can operate commercial vessels up to a length of 24 meters.

You can operate at both day or night time.

Boaters' perceptions of 'favourable' weather vary based on factors like experience, vessel type, size, and planned route.

Favourable conditions

Up to 20 miles from a safe haven. Category 3 surpasses the limitations of categories 4, 5 and 6.

License Requirements

To obtain a commercially endorsed Advanced Powerboat license, candidates must fulfil requirements including completion of specified RYA courses, possession of a medical fitness certificate, and sea time.

In order to apply for a commercial license, you must have met the following requirements:

RYA Powerboat Courses:

Medical:

  • A valid ML5 or ENG1

(Please make sure your medical fitness certificate is in date. We cannot provide you with an ML5 or ENG1 medical. However, we recommend looking at the list of UK based MCA approved doctors. The average cost is around £100.)

Sea Time:

  • 30 days experience 

  • 2 days as skipper

  • 800 miles

  • 12 night hours

Completed the Advanced Powerboat course? Your sea time is reduced to:

  • 20 days experience (usually 30 days)

  • 2 days as skipper

  • 400 miles (slashed from 800 miles)

  • 12 night hours

(You'll have to provide evidence e.g. logbook)

  • 17 years old
